Sangrento, a primeira do Piauí.
ABSTRACT: This dissertation analyzes the configuration of a marginal youth culture in Teresina during the 1970s, taking asits main axis the work of the young artist Arnaldo Albuquerque. Arnaldo Albuquerque and his contemporaries are examined as subject-signs of a period marked by countercultural influences, the development of aesthetic experimentation, and the emergence
of artistic languages considered marginal in the capital of the state of Piauí. Within this context, the study maps two distinct generations of young artists and writers, the Gramma Generation and the Mimeógrafo Generation, seeking to understand both the similarities and the differences between them, as well as the internal dynamics within each group. More broadly, the work of Arnaldo Albuquerque and his contemporaries reveals tensions between a regional cultural identity, conceived by these young artists as tradition and as a defining marker of their existence, and a global, mass-mediated, and modern cultural identity, often perceived as invasive and as disseminating homogenizing and alienating practices. These tensions unfolded within a broader context of artistic movements that were proposing new ways of thinking about Brazilian and Northeastern culture. The research draws primarily on alternative newspapers, books, and magazines, as well as experimental Super-8 films produced within this milieu and
involving the participation of Arnaldo Albuquerque. It also examines his cartoons published in widely circulated newspapers and his comic magazine Humor Sangrento, the first comic publication produced in the state of Piauí. Special attention is given to interviews with participants from these generations—most of them conducted within the theoretical and methodological framework of Oral History—and to the ways in which their memories both shape and are shaped by retrospective narratives about this historical context. The study is theoretically informed by discussions from fields such as youth studies, in-between identities, counterculture, experimental arts, and generation. Key theoretical references include Stuart Hall (2006), Homi Bhabha (1998), Michel Foucault (2006), Félix Guattari and Suely Rolnik (1996), Michel de Certeau (1998), Leon Kaminski (2022), Edward Castelo Branco (2005), and Fábio Leonardo Brito (2016). |
