Abstract:
ABSTRACT: Alagoinha do Piauí, between the years 2013 and 2016, in television reports broadcast by the programs Repórter Record Investigação (Rede Record ) and Profissão Repórter (Rede Globo). The analysis focuses on the use of sensationalist verbal-visual resources in addressing the illiteracy rates in the aforementioned city and the allegations of corruption in the implementation of the Brazil Literate Program at the municipal level. The study is based on different types of sources: audiovisual (the two television reports already mentioned); newspaper articles (on-line newspapers); oral (residents of the city of Alagoinha do Piauí); and written (data from IBGE [2010], reports and class diaries relating to the implementation of the Brazil Literate Program
in the municipality under study). The analysis of the sources and conceptual keys presented in this work engages with the theoretical reflections of Durval Muniz de Albuquerque Júnior (2010), to discuss the idea of the Northeast ; José Cristian Góes (2014) and Ana Luiza Lugão (2010), to discuss sensationalism ; Eduardo Vinicius de Sales Alves (2014), to discuss stereotypes ; Michel de Certeau (1998), to discuss strategies , tactics , and practices ; and Angela Maria Alonso (2023) to discuss the June Journeys and anti-PT sentiment . As a theoretical-methodological framework for the analysis of television reports and journalistic portals, it engages with José d'Assunção Barros (2022; 2023) and, to examine oral accounts in light of Oral History, it engages with Verena Alberti (2011). The study pointed to the occurrence of fraud in the execution of the Brazil Literate Program in Alagoinha do Piauí and the sensationalist nature present in the discursive constructions of the narratives broadcast on national television. A contextualization of the period in which the reports were aired was carried out in order to analyze how the denunciation surrounding the program may have contributed to
tensioning the local political landscape, while simultaneously being articulated within a broader context marked, from 2013 onwards, by the strengthening of anti-PT sentiment in Brazil and the growing delegitimization of policies associated with the Workers' Party, a process that culminated in the impeachment of former President Dilma Rousseff in 2016.
