Abstract:
ABSTRACT: In this Thesis, the modernization process that Piauí underwent in the period from 1930 to 1945
is analyzed, especially in the areas of education, press and transformations in the local urban space, reflecting how the Piauí governments were involved in the construction of the image of a “New Piauí”, which had strong links with the Vargas political project. In this scenario of modernization, it can be seen that several standardizing mechanisms were used to build political power in the territory of Piauí, which included the dissemination of a nationalist political culture, the regime's political propaganda and the elaboration of strategies that aimed to awaken feelings of adherence. the prescriptions of the government of Getúlio Vargas and the interventions in Piauí. To carry out the research, a variety of sources were used, such as the newspapers Diário Oficial, Gazeta, O Piauí, Vanguarda, school newspapers, such as A Escola, A Luz, among other sources, composed of Government Messages, Reports from Teresina City Hall, Laws, Decrees, almanacs, telegrams, photographs, and interviews with Piauí residents who experienced the modernization process in the Vargas Era. The theoretical- methodological and historiographical categories used were the propositions of Marshall Berman (2007), Claude Rivière (1989), Georges Balandier (1982), Serge Berstein (1998), Dominique Julia (2001), Maria Helena Capelato (2009), Antônio Paulo Rezende (1997), Alcides Nascimento (2015), Cláudia Fontineles (2015), among others, who helped with reflections on modernization, political liturgies, construction of symbols of power, political culture, school culture and political propaganda in the Getulista period. In this sense, it can be seen that Piauí went through a process of modernization in which it carried strong persuasive elements for the construction of order and which sought to strengthen Vargas power and local governments. However, it is noted that the people of Piauí expressed themselves in different ways regarding the regulations of the time, demonstrating feelings of seduction, fear, anguish, and confrontations with the
dictates of the Vargas regime.
