ENTRE A GEOGRAFIA, A HISTÓRIA E A LITERATURA: JOÃO GABRIEL BAPTISTA (1920-2010) E SUA CONSTITUIÇÃO ENQUANTO INTELECTUAL NA SEGUNDA METADE DO SÉCULO XX NO PIAUÍ

Abstract

RESUMO: Este trabalho produziu uma narrativa sobre João Gabriel Baptista (1920-2010), com o objetivo de discutir as condições históricas que permitiram que o sujeito em tela se tornasse um intelectual na segunda metade do século XX no Piauí. A metodologia constou de pesquisa bibliográfica utilizando-se de autores como Bourdieu (2006), Gomes (2004), Sirinelli (1998; 2003), Loriga (2011), Arfuch (2010), Seligmann-Silva (2003), Halbwachs (2006), Pollak (1989), Hall (2006), Bauman (2005), Woodward (2014), Chartier (1991) e Alberti (2013) para operacionalização dos conceitos de Biografia, Escrita de Si, Identidade, Redes de Sociabilidade, Memória, a categoria de Intelectual e para a metodologia da História Oral. Quanto às fontes, trabalhamos com a pesquisa hemerográfica, utilizando jornais publicados no Maranhão e Piauí entre meados do século XIX até o início do século XXI, bem como documentos do poder executivo, especificamente relatórios de governo do Piauí publicados no início do século XX, livros de memória, entrevistas com sujeitos que conheceram e conviveram com o personagem em tela desta pesquisa no ambiente profissional ou familiar, além da própria produção acadêmica e literária de João Gabriel Baptista e imagens. Indicou-se a relevância que a atuação de sua família na política e sociedade piauiense entre o século XIX e XX teve para sua formação e, posteriormente, inserção nas redes de sociabilidade intelectuais do Piauí na segunda metade do século XX. Não obstante isto, a pesquisa permitiu compreender ainda não apenas de que modo João Gabriel Baptista constituiu-se enquanto intelectual, mas como se tornou um pioneiro no campo da Geografia, tendo em vista que foi o primeiro pesquisador piauiense da área a produzir um estudo sistemático a partir de um espaço acadêmico e intelectual. Inferiu-se ainda acerca de como seu imaginário esteve marcado por questões sensíveis de sua época, refletindo diretamente nas representações construídas em suas obras, tanto literárias, como acadêmicas. Por fim, o estudo tornou possível também refletir sobre as várias representações construídas sobre João Gabriel Baptista ao longo de sua trajetória, bem como depois de sua morte no ano de 2010 em Teresina (PI) em decorrência do mal de Alzheimer. ABSTRACT: This work produced a narrative about João Gabriel Baptista (1920-2010), with the objective to discuss the historical conditions that allowed the subject in question to become an intellectual in the second half of the 20th century in Piauí. The methodology consisted of bibliographic research using authors such as Bourdieu (2006), Gomes (2004), Sirinelli (1998; 2003), Loriga (2011), Arfuch (2010), Seligmann-Silva (2003), Halbwachs (2006), Pollak (1989), Hall (2006), Bauman (2005), Woodward (2014), Chartier (1991) and Alberti (2013) to operationalize the concepts of Biography, Self-Writing, Identity, Sociability Networks, Memory, the Intellectual category and for the Oral History methodology. As for the sources, we work with hemerographic research, using newspapers published in Maranhão and Piauí between the mid-nineteenth century to the beginning of the twenty-first century, as well as documents from the executive power, specifically government reports from Piauí published in the early twentieth century, books by memory, interviews with subjects who knew and lived with the screen character of this research in the professional or family environment, as well as the academic and literary production of João Gabriel Baptista and images. The relevance that the role of his family in Piauí's politics and society between the 19th and 20th century had for his formation and, later, insertion in the intellectual sociability networks of Piauí in the second half of the 20th century was indicated. Nevertheless, the research allowed us to understand not only how João Gabriel Baptista constituted himself as an intellectual, but how he became a pioneer in the field of Geography, considering that he was the first researcher from Piauí in the area to produce a systematic study from an academic and intellectual space. It was also inferred about how his imagination was marked by sensitive issues of his time, reflecting directly on the representations built in his works, both literary and academic. Finally, the study also made it possible to reflect on the various representations built on João Gabriel Baptista throughout his trajectory, as well as after his death in 2010 in Teresina (PI) because of Alzheimer's disease.
