Abstract:
ABSTRACT: This research aims to analyze the international news coverage published by the newspaper
Correio da Manhã (RJ), a major periodical of the Rio de Janeiro press, concerning the
Palestinian Question, within the temporal framework from February 1947 to May 1948, that is, on the eve of the First Arab-Israeli War (1948–1949), the first large-scale military conflict between Palestinians and Jews. The objective is to understand how the narrative constructed by this nationally circulated newspaper engages in the production of representations of the conflict, in light of the relationship between History and representations as proposed by Roger Chartier (2002). In addition, the study seeks to reflect on the character of international news as an instance of ideological production, mobilizing the Gramscian categories of ideology, private apparatus of hegemony, and organic intellectuality, considering both the newspaper as an institutional entity and its direct producers, the journalists. The research is structured so as to discuss the specificities of the source, in dialogue with authors such as José D’Assunção Barros (2023) and Sônia Maria de Meneses Silva (2011), while also examining the
representations constructed around the key moments of the escalation of tensions in Palestine that led to the outbreak of armed conflict. In this way, the investigation is situated within the theoretical and methodological field of History and Press studies in Brazil, drawing on the contributions of De Luca (2008), Figueiredo (1998), Barros (2023), and Ribeiro (2000; 2003).
