ABSTRACT: This research analyzes Brazilian military uniforms, their insignia, and their role in strengthening the identity of the Brazilian army between 1908 and 1951. The investigation is
structured around the following questions: Who was responsible for designing the uniforms? What aesthetic and functional standards (German, French, and American) influenced the uniforms of the Brazilian Army? How did the uniforms contribute to the public perception of the Army? The theoretical framework is based on Pierre Bourdieu (1989), Diana Crane (2006), Piero Leirner (1997), Gustavo Barroso (1922) e Celso Castro (2021) for understanding the notions of symbolic power, fashion, nationalism, war, and the Brazilian Army, respectively. The methodology adopts a qualitative historiographical approach, emphasizing documentary, iconographic, and oral sources. Finally, the relevance of the research is justified by the analysis of Brazilian Army uniforms as a construction of identity and representation of the visual power
and values of the institution. |
