ABSTRACT: The research to be developed in this doctoral thesis will seek to produce a more in-depth
reflection on the study of the uses of the classical past in contemporary times. The
proposal consists of investigating the ideological implications of ancient school history,
more precisely the concepts of 'democracy' and 'republic' in the Universal History
compendia of Justiniano José da Rocha (1860), Pedro Parley (1869), Victor Duruy
(1865), Padre Raphael M. Galanti S. J (1907) and de Rocha Pombo (1900), dedicated to
the contents of Ancient History, bearing in mind the relevance of classical studies for the
humanistic training intended by secondary schools. The choice of these compendiums has as its main justification the circulation of these works in the national territory in the period that encompasses the second half of the Brazilian Empire and the first republic, a time in which important educational reforms occurred for the country that demonstrate the proposal of a secondary level institution as something essential, urgent and necessary, taking court teaching as a model. To better understand this process, we highlight as a time frame the initial milestone of our study with the Couto Ferraz reform enacted in 1954 and we will continue studying until the Brazilian education law Rivadávia Correia in 1911/1912. The methodology for carrying out this research proposal will be the analysis of the speeches present/absent in our sources, based on the model offered by Michel Pêcheux, our main theoretical reference. Furthermore, authors Gregolin (2006), Orlandi (2004,2007), Picanço (2006), who share the same Pêcheux analysis methodology, will also help us understand the rhetorical devices present in our sources. |
