Abstract:
As
ABSTRACT: The present study sought to understand how the Base Ecclesial Communities (CEBs) of the Catholic Church developed their actions in the Greater Picos Region during the 1970s and
1980s, analyzing their process of formation as an ecclesial social movement distinct from Traditional Popular Catholicism. In this sense, this dissertation aimed to demonstrate that the Greater Picos Region, in south-central Piauí, during the period under analysis, became an important locus of action for the CEBs. Through their political practices, and by employing a religious language shaped by the “preferential option for the poor” of Liberation Theology, the CEBs re-signified the traditional Catholic ecclesiology of the region. Thus, with an identity closely related to its local context, this social movement distinguished itself from others in Piauí by its struggle in defense of poor rural (sertanejo) communities, positioning itself in opposition to the state-led developmentalism of the period, and attributing a politico-religious meaning to
social inequality and droughts. Methodologically, in addition to the bibliography on social
movements (Gohn, 2000), the research drew on oral, hemerographic, and documentary sources, such as minutes of meetings, gatherings, and assemblies of the CEBs, as well as monographs and dissertations by researchers from Piauí. The oral sources consisted of 21 interviews conducted with activists in agrarian reform camps and settlements and in the Greater Picos Region between 2006 and 2024. Regarding studies on Piauí, the research mainly relied on works published by the Center for Economic and Social Research of Piauí (CEPRO), which has historically been a fertile ground for the production of ideas by economists, geographers, historians, and sociologists from the state. The historiographical discussions that involve the
political and the cultural are grounded in Marc Bloch (2002), René Rémond (2003), E. P.
Thompson (1981; 1997; 1998; 2011), and Michel de Certeau (1998; 2000; 2021). The analyses were carried out with the aim of constructing a social, political, and economic framework of the reality of Piauí, highlighting this region during the 1970s and 1980s, emphasizing drought, migration, and social struggles, and situating the CEBs as a social product of this context.
