ABSTRACT: Cactus pear is an extremely important crop for the Brazilian semi-arid region, however, it is cultivated with a low technological level, which reduces its productive potential. In this sense, a low-cost and highly sustainable technology is the use of inoculants containing plant growth-promoting bacteria (PGPB), as they have potential for use in agriculture as a complement to chemical nitrogen fertilizers. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the role of PGPB in the morphology, growth and nitrogen metabolism of two cactus cultivars (baiana and doce) under different nitrogen fertilization regimes in semi-arid soil in Piauí. Six treatments composed of two strains of Bacillus subtilis (IPACC29 and IPACC26), two strains of Paenibacillus sp. (IPACC55 and IPACC38), a commercial inoculant containing strains of Azospirillum brasilense (AbV5+AbV6) (AB) and a control without inoculation were associated with three doses of N (0, 50 and 100%). The cultivars responded differently to inoculation with PGPB and N doses. Most morphometric parameters were influenced only by N doses. For the baiana cultivar, when cultivated at a dose of 50%, the IPACC29 strain increased production of fresh (CFM) and dry mass (CDM) of cladodes and total dry mass (TDM), the IPACC26 strain was highligh ted in increasing the content (NCC) and accumulation (NAC) of N of cladodes, the activity of nitrate reductase in roots and the soluble protein of cladodes (CSP), IPACC55 increased the ammonium content of roots (RNH4+) and soluble carbohydrates of cladodes and this strain together with IPACC38 was efficient in increasing N-aminosolubles of roots (RNamino). For the doce cultivar, at a dose of 50%, IPACC38 stood out in increasing CFM, CDM and TDM, the IPACC29 and AB strains were efficient in increasing NCC, NAC, RNH4+ and CSP, all inoculations increased the levels of RNamino and the soluble root protein and strains IPACC38 and AB increased the nitrate content of cladodes. These results suggest that the strains IPACC26, IPACC29 and IPACC55 have potential for use as inoculants in cactus pear cultivation. pt_BR
