ABSTRACT: This thesis investigates recognition from an ethical-political perspective,
understanding that openness to others and to the possibilities of understanding
them is a fundamental condition for accessing and constructing the world in which
we live, thereby broadening the ways in which subjects can be and act. From this
perspective, recognition is understood as an issue that mobilizes mediating
processes and structures in the political sphere (of institutions and social
organizations) and operates within a horizon that aims for peaceful coexistence,
conceived not as the suppression of conflict, but as its elaboration within a
dialectical logic of consensus and conflict. We start from the premise that the
contemporary context we experience is strongly marked not by a problem of
recognition, but by its negation, where each of us, taken as a political body, forms
a complex mosaic in which misunderstanding becomes evident. For this reason,
we face the challenge of going with and beyond the phenomenological-
hermeneutic work of Paul Ricoeur, from a pluralist perspective, recognizing that
the responsibility surrounding a project of recognition occurs not only in horizontal
person-to-person relationships (I-you), but is deeply rooted in the shared world
and in the institutional mediations that make life in common possible. Finding, in
Ricoeurian philosophy, a political dimension of recognition does not mean
reducing this phenomenon to its strictly political sense, but rather broadening and
enriching its understanding in the face of a power to act. It is a sign of the task
before people, relationships, and a world that is autonomous, vulnerable, and
responsible. In this sense, we propose the figure of compromise as an expression
and symptomatic reinforcement of political responsibility and hermeneutic
mediation capable of articulating the imaginative, affective, and practical
dimensions of existence. Put to the test of reality, compromise emerges as a
possibility for the reordering of praxis and the renewal of the subject’s power to
act. It is thus fulfilled in the presence of the other who calls upon us to answer for
the world we share, in navigating the gaps in recognition, in the ambiguous
mediation of institutions – bringing subjects together through the normative
continuity of the collective while introducing distances by universalizing relations
and formalizing bonds – and in the unpredictability of the consequences of action.
Thus, as a phenomenological-hermeneutical figure, compromise does not seek
definitive results, but reopens fundamental questions about the conditions of
possibility for a common life guided by phronesis. |
