Abstract:
pastagens, suplemento e sal mineral.
A suplementação
ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether unconventional supplementation influences
the intake and apparent digestibility of dietary nutrients and the economic viability of
raising Nellore calves on pasture. A completely randomized design was adopted, with 20
in vitro fertilization (IVF) calves distributed into two treatments, with 10 animals per
treatment: BN = non-supplemented calves, which received 20 mL of water orally on the
90th day of life, and BS = supplemented calves, which received 20 mL of unconventional
dietary supplement orally on the 90th day of life. The experiment was carried out at
Uberlândia Farm, in the municipality of Parnaguá - PI, in a rotational grazing system. The
pasture was evaluated on the first day and every 28 days, when 20 samples were collected
per paddock to determine the forage mass, available dry matter and nutritional value of
the forage. Milk consumption by calves was assessed on the 120th day of the experiment
by estimation, by weighing the animals before and after feeding, preceded by a 12-hour
fast. To determine the chemical composition of the milk, milk samples were collected
from the cows for analysis of fat, protein, lactose and total solids contents. To assess
consumption, nutrient digestibility and performance of the calves, the animals were
weighed after a 12-hour fast. Forage consumption was estimated using the external
indicator LIPE®, plus milk consumption, obtaining the total dry matter (DM)
intake/animal/day. The ingestive behavior of the calves in grazing was assessed in the
field for 24 hours, when they remained with the cows. For the economic evaluation, the
partial budget method was adopted, considering the determining factors of meat
production and the feeding systems adopted, such as pastures, supplements and mineral
salt. The data were subjected to analysis of variance and F-test. The results were
considered significant when P ≤ 0.05, and trends were considered when 0.05 < P ≤ 0.10,
and the GLM procedure of the SAS statistical software was adopted. The unconventional
dietary supplementation of calves did not influence (P> 0.05) the intake and apparent
digestibility of the nutrients in the diet; however, it resulted in lower (P=0.0325)
digestibility of the ether extract. The unconventional supplementation of calves resulted
in better conversion (P=0.0037) and feed efficiency (P=0.0033) of the diet. Although the
unconventional supplementation showed a tendency to reduce (P=0.0660) the total cost
with roughage and the variable cost, there was an increase in the cost with supplement
(P=0.0001). Unconventional supplementation did not influence (P>0.05) the ingestive
behavior of calves or the discrete periods and aspects of rumination, although there was
a tendency for reduced chewing speed (P=0.0927) and increased chewing time
(P=0.0990) during rumination. It is concluded that unconventional supplementation does
not substantially influence intake, nutrient digestibility and ingestive behavior, but
improves feed conversion and efficiency of the diet by calves. Regarding the marginal
rate of return, there is no economic attractiveness for carrying out unconventional
supplementation.
