ABSTRACT: The production of initial growth of seedlings with inert substrate is a practice that has been gaining prominence in recent years; however, it is limited by the ideal balance of ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-) in the culture medium. Excess NH4+ increases the number of oxygen species that affect the integrity of the membrane and chloroplasts, causing damage to the photosystem. Given the above, the objective of this study was to evaluate the mitigating effect of Si on the nutritional, biochemical, physiological status and growth of yellow passion fruit grown under ammonia toxicity in nutrient solution. For this, tests were carried out with yellow passion fruit seedlings grown in inert substrate with a randomized block design in a 3 x 2 + 1 factorial scheme, with the first factor being: NH4+/NO3- proportions of 50/50, 70/30 and 100/0 under the concentration of 13 mmol L-1; the second factor: ii) presence and absence of silicon (2 mmol L-1), while the additional treatment with a ratio of 100/0 under the concentration of 20 mmol L-1 with the presence of silicon. The results demonstrate the beneficial effect of Si, when plants are subjected to stressful conditions, improving the efficiency of photosynthesis and alleviating leaf injuries triggered by excess NH4+. The increase in the proportions of ammonium in relation to nitrate causes damage to the photosynthetic machinery, dry mass production and photosynthetic pigments of yellow passion fruit plants. Ammonium concentrations above 6.5 mmol L-1 severely reduce the initial growth of yellow passion fruit plants. Silicon attenuated the adverse effects on plants at concentrations of 6.5 to 20 mmol L-1, alleviating symptoms and improving photosynthetic performance. pt_BR
