A sobreposição
Metodologicamente, a
ABSTRACT: This thesis analyzes the reorganization of land tenure and the dynamics of conflict in
the rural world of the Province of Piauí during the second half of the nineteenth
century, articulating land, water, and power as structuring axes of agrarian
experience. Situated within the context of territorial regulation attempts promoted by
the 1850 Land Law and its 1854 Regulation, the study demonstrates that the lack of
effective surveying and demarcation of public and private lands produced a persistent
condition of legal insecurity. The overlap of possessions, the progressive
fragmentation of properties, and the permanence of undivided lands intensified
disputes among smallholders, heirs of former sesmarias, poor free workers, and local
authorities, revealing a social landscape marked by imprecise boundaries and
customary territorial practices. Through a comparative analysis of Parish Land
Registers (1854–1860) and State Land Registers (1898–1908), the thesis identifies a
significant increase in the number of landholders without a proportional expansion in
the number of registered estates, evidencing a process of land fragmentation that
heightened local tensions. Within this framework, water emerges as a central
variable: in a province characterized by irregular rainfall and the vulnerability of
natural water sources, access to wells, reservoirs, dams, and water routes became
essential for remaining on the land. The study of a conflict surrounding the
construction of a well in undivided lands in the locality of Paus-Branco (district of
Marvão), widely debated in provincial newspapers, reveals that seemingly localized
disputes reflected broader struggles involving honor, authority, jurisdiction, and
control over vital resources. Methodologically, the research combines serial analysis
of land records available in the INTERPI Digital Archive with a critical reading of
criminal court records preserved in the Public Archive of the State of Maranhão,
Provincial Presidents’ Reports, and newspaper sources from the National Library’s
Digital Hemeroteca. Grounded in Social History, Legal Process History, and
Environmental History, the thesis argues that land conflicts were not marginal events
but structural components of nineteenth-century Piauí’s social and economic
organization. Finally, by engaging with contemporary challenges of land
regularization and land governance in the state of Piauí, the study demonstrates that
the historical persistence of legal insecurity, land fragmentation, and the centrality of
water continues to shape rural disputes and public policies.

NASCIMENTO, Bárbara Bruma Rocha do
ABSTRACT: This doctoral dissertation investigates the transnational connections between Brazil and Chile by analyzing the cultural magazine La Bicicleta, published in Santiago, Chile, between 1978 and 1987. Created by a group of young Chileans, the magazine emerged as a vehicle for disseminating artistic and cultural production during Augusto Pinochet's military dictatorship (1973-1990), establishing itself as an alternative media outlet that resisted the regime's repressive strategies. The magazine's significance as a source for this investigation lies in its capacity to build a network of collaborators that transcended Chilean borders, involving Chilean artists, intellectuals, and exiles, as well as establishing dialogues with cultural productions from other Latin American countries, especially Brazil, from the 1980s onward. This exchange of ideas, information, and experiences constituted a transnational experience, marked by connections and solidarities within a context of shared authoritarian regimes. A transnational approach guides this analysis, focusing on the cultural and artistic interactions that developed amidst the military dictatorships in Latin America. Initially, the study examines the links between the military coups in the Southern Cone, highlighting Brazil's involvement in supporting the 1973 Chilean coup and the downfall of Salvador Allende's socialist government. This scenario was marked by the flow of Brazilian exiles to Chile after the 1964 coup in Brazil, which reinforced the connections between the two countries. Subsequently, the research analyzes how, starting in 1978, Chilean youth reorganized and sought forms of cultural resistance, driven by an apparent political opening resulting from international pressure on the Pinochet regime. In this context, alternative publications like La Bicicleta emerged, linked to talleres culturales (cultural workshops) and the Agrupación Cultural Universitaria (University Cultural Association), which broadened the debate on Latin American cultural production, frequently including Brazil as a reference. The proposal to create a cancioneiro latino-americano (Latin American songbook), present in the magazine's pages, exemplifies this transnational articulation. For the development of this research, theoretical and methodological references are mobilized from authors such as Idelber Avelar, Samantha Viz Quadrat, Rodrigo Patto Sá Motta, Maria Helena Capelato, Tania Regina de Luca, Maria Ligia Prado, Bárbara Weinstein, Patricia Clavin, Víctor Muñoz Tamayo, Beatriz Sarlo, and Karen Donoso Fritz, among others. Contributions from Latin American researchers are prioritized, as their work offers fundamental support for understanding cultural and political dynamics in dictatorial contexts. Thus, the proposed analysis seeks to elucidate how art and culture served as tools for resistance and the construction of transnational networks during a period marked by repression and the search for solidarity among countries under authoritarian regies.

As
ABSTRACT: The present study sought to understand how the Base Ecclesial Communities (CEBs) of the Catholic Church developed their actions in the Greater Picos Region during the 1970s and
1980s, analyzing their process of formation as an ecclesial social movement distinct from Traditional Popular Catholicism. In this sense, this dissertation aimed to demonstrate that the Greater Picos Region, in south-central Piauí, during the period under analysis, became an important locus of action for the CEBs. Through their political practices, and by employing a religious language shaped by the “preferential option for the poor” of Liberation Theology, the CEBs re-signified the traditional Catholic ecclesiology of the region. Thus, with an identity closely related to its local context, this social movement distinguished itself from others in Piauí by its struggle in defense of poor rural (sertanejo) communities, positioning itself in opposition to the state-led developmentalism of the period, and attributing a politico-religious meaning to
social inequality and droughts. Methodologically, in addition to the bibliography on social
movements (Gohn, 2000), the research drew on oral, hemerographic, and documentary sources, such as minutes of meetings, gatherings, and assemblies of the CEBs, as well as monographs and dissertations by researchers from Piauí. The oral sources consisted of 21 interviews conducted with activists in agrarian reform camps and settlements and in the Greater Picos Region between 2006 and 2024. Regarding studies on Piauí, the research mainly relied on works published by the Center for Economic and Social Research of Piauí (CEPRO), which has historically been a fertile ground for the production of ideas by economists, geographers, historians, and sociologists from the state. The historiographical discussions that involve the
political and the cultural are grounded in Marc Bloch (2002), René Rémond (2003), E. P.
Thompson (1981; 1997; 1998; 2011), and Michel de Certeau (1998; 2000; 2021). The analyses were carried out with the aim of constructing a social, political, and economic framework of the reality of Piauí, highlighting this region during the 1970s and 1980s, emphasizing drought, migration, and social struggles, and situating the CEBs as a social product of this context.

Adoecimento e morte na Ibiapaba oitocentista (1850-1890): transcender, decompor e contaminar.
AGUIAR, Daniel de Sá
RESUMO: Esta tese investiga a cultura do adoecimento e da morte sob as perspectivas secular
e religiosa na Ibiapaba durante a segunda metade do século XIX (1850-1890). O
Bezerra de Menezes, ambos a serviço do Estado.
morte".
ABSTRACT: This research investigates the culture of illness and death under a secular and religious
perspective in Ibiapaba during the second half of the 19th century (1850-1890). This
epoch is characterized by the diffusion and implementation of scientific discourses
through state actions. Unlike a past dominated by the spiritual view of bodies, whether
of the indigenous people who occupied Ibiapaba or the Catholic Church and its rites.
The research tries to understand both the maintenance processes and the new forms
of westernization and ordering of the material and spiritual world, based on the religious
and scientific discourses and practices established in the region. In this context, the
naturalist and determinist views of the scientific commission led by Freire Alemão stand
out, as well as the observations of Antônio Bezerra de Menezes in the region, both
serving the State, which incorporates discourses of "civility" and hygiene actions that
guided the incipient public health policies with the creation of laws, organs, prohibitions
of burials in churches, and construction of public cemeteries. From this moment on,
bodies were not only seen from the aspect of transcendence, salvation, haunting,
magic, but as propagators of diseases through the miasmatic theory. However, the
population incorporated the Catholic funeral culture to the detriment of the indigenous
people who formed Ibiapaba, to guarantee a "good death", that is, to avoid continuation
of earthly suffering in the afterlife and, through masses, coffins, sacraments, and
mortuary attire, individuals highlighted social hierarchies. Participation in brotherhoods
was a way to guarantee a symbolic-material apparatus at the last moment, but these
did not always act harmoniously with the Catholic Church, whether in the
administration of the cemetery or the funeral rituals of the ibiapabanos, showing that
death had a dimension of power disputes. The documentation used to understand and
highlight these relationships were travel diaries, provincial reports, newspapers,
legislation, parish archives and statutes.
