A CIDADE DE CRISTAL: identidade e evasão na cultura local de Caxias (1914 – 1937)

Abstract

RESUMO: Este trabalho analisa o discurso identitário da“terra dos poetas” como estratégia de evasão do tempo nas falas de operadoes da escrita em Caxias entre 1914 e 1937. Na passagem do século XIX para o XX, após passar por um rápido processo de industrialização e prosperidade, a cidade de Caxias foi denominada “Manchester Maranhense”, o que revela um projeto modernizador que exigia a adesão à temporalidade linear do progresso, na qual as existências são dissolvidas em um presumido futuro promissor. Mas a obsolência da incipiente indústria caxiense e seu declínio no mercado internacional incidiram no fracasso histórico desse projeto. A cidade começa a ser recoberta, pelo do esforço discursivo de intelectuais elitistas, com uma tintura identitária que a transmutaria de “Manchester maranhense” em “terra dos poetas”. Tendo em vista este quadro brevemente descrito propõe-se analisar a emergência desse discurso como parte substancial de uma reação cultural à decadência econômica das elites caxienses. Nesta reação, francamente discursiva, estaria implícita uma recusa ao tempo linear, para o qual intelectuais caxienses encetariam estratégias de fuga que, por sua vez, acabariam por erigir um tempo-cristal em que passado e presente são continuamente espelhados e alimentados um pelo outro, e que permitiria à cidade manter-se discursivamente suspensa no tempo cristalizado dos signos da tradição........ABSTRACT This work analyzes the discourse of identity of "Land of poets" as a strategy to evade the time in the writing operator’s speeches between 1914 and 1937. In the passage from the 19th century to the 20th century, after going through a rapid process of industrialization and prosperity, the city of Caxias was called "Manchester of Maranhão", which reveals a project modernizing that required adherence to linear temporality of progress, in which stocks are dissolved in a presumed promising future. But the obsolescence of the nascent industry Caxias and its decline in the international market resulted in the historical failure of this project. The city begins, then, to be covered by a discursive effort of intellectuals elitist, with a tincture of identity that transmute of "Manchester of Maranhão" in "the land of poets". In view of this framework briefly described the research is proposed to analyze the emergence of this discourse as a substantial part of a cultural reaction to the economic decline of the elites caxienses. In this reaction, frankly, would be implied a rejection of the linear time, for which intellectuals caxienses wold have draw strategies to escape that, in turn, had to erect a time-crystal in that past and present are continually reflected and fed one by another, which would allow the city to keep discursively suspended in time crystallised the signs of tradition.
