ABSTRACT: To achieve a better overall understanding of maize nutrition, studies are fundamentally requiredof the rate of nutrient uptake in each part of the plant, as a function of the phenological stages of the crop and the accumulation of degree days, considering that maize is a plant that undergoes the influence of temperature over the duration of the cycle, with potential alterations in the patterns of nutrient uptake. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the nutrient uptake and partitioning, growth and development of the maize crop by phenological stage and heat sum, under the edaphoclimatic conditions of the city of Brejo, MA. The experiment was conducted in yellow Argissolo, under randomized block design with seven treatments , corresponding to collecting periods V5, V8, VT, R1, R3, R5, and R6 equivalent to the total number of degree days 348, 591, 840, 1.085, 1.334, 1.845 and 2.097, respectively, with four repeats. At each time period, biometric analyses were performed, plant partitioning into leaves, stem, reproductive organs (stalk, straw, cob), and grains, to determine the N, P, K, Ca, Mg, S, B, Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn contents. With the results of dry matter and nutrient contents, the nutrient accumulation was calculated in each organ in the different phenological stages. A slow accumulation of dry matter was observed in the maize plant until the flowering stage (VT), a pattern observed, also, for the nutrients P, Mg, S, and Cu. In contrast, N, K, Ca, B, Fe, Mn, and Zn showed values close to or greater than 50% of the maximum accumulated until VT. The decreasing order of accumulation of macro and micronutrients is N>K>P>Ca>S>Mg and Fe>Zn>Mn>Cu>B, respectively. The nutrients with the highest harvest index, in decreasing order, are P>N>S>Zn (0.84; 0.74; 0.65 and 0.51, respectively). The maize yield dependes on the supply of P, S, Mg, Cu over the cycle, as most of it is uptaken and accumulated after flowering; for N, K, Ca, B, Zn Fe and Mg more than 50% is taken up by flowering.
