A RESPOSTA POPPERIANA PARA AS TESES HOLÍSTICAS DE DUHEM E QUINE

Abstract

RESUMO: O presente trabalho pretende abordar – através dos pensamentos de Duhem (1861-1916), Quine (1908-2000) e Popper (1902-1994) – importantes considerações na área da filosofia da ciência. Por meio da apresentação das teses holísticas elaboradas por Duhem e Quine, que consideram não uma hipótese tomada individualmente o elemento necessário para a realização de um teste de uma teoria, mas a conjunção dessa hipótese com uma grande variedade de hipóteses auxiliares muitas vezes implícitas, faremos uma distinção entre o holismo apresentado por ambos. Popper surgirá nessa dissertação em consequência dos desafios que o holismo coloca em seu critério de falseabilidade das teorias científicas; portanto, esse trabalho também envolverá a tese falsificacionista de Popper como critério de demarcação entre ciência e as chamadas pseudo-ciências, além de problemas no tocante da condição empírica de enunciados singulares e o modo como são testados. Por último, a partir do que foi visto em Duhem, Quine e em Popper, será realizado um confronto entre a tese falsificacionista de Popper com as teses holísticas apresentadas por Duhem e Quine para apontar que Popper esteve ciente das dificuldades implantadas pelo holismo. ABSTRACT: The present work intends to approach - through the thinkings of Duhem (1861-1916), Quine (1908-2000) and Popper (1902-1994) - important considerations in the area of the philosophy of science. By means of the presentation of the holistic theses elaborated by Duhem and Quine, which consider not a single hypothesis taken individually the necessary element for the realization of a test in a theory, but the conjunction of this hypothesis with a great variety of auxiliary hypotheses often implicits, we will make a distinction between the holism presented by both. Popper will emerge in this dissertation as a consequence of the challenges that holism poses in its criterion of falsifiability of the scientific theories; therefore, this work will also involve the falsificationist approach of Popper as criterion of demarcation between science and the so-called pseudo-sciences, besides problems in relation to the empirical condition of singular statements and the way in which they are tested. Lastly, from what has been seen in Duhem, Quine, and Popper, a confrontation between Popper's falsificationist thesis and the holistic theses presented by Duhem and Quine will be made to point out that Popper was aware of the difficulties implanted by holism.
