VIVER E SOBREVIVER: o cotidiano das mulheres pobres em Teresina (1890-1920)

Abstract

RESUMO: Este trabalho estuda as condições históricas e sociais que envolveram o cotidiano de mulheres pobres em Teresina, capital do Estado do Piauí, durante os anos 1890 a 1920. Questiona-se as formas de perceber as mulheres pobres da cidade, as normas que asseguram essa definição e as articulações das suas práticas à nova organização social da República e aos projetos de modernização e civilização que intelectuais almejavam para Teresina. Pretende-se assim, conhecer os códigos sociais e culturais que incidiam sobre as mulheres desses segmentos, através da análise das condições de vida, do trabalho, do lazer e de quando se envolviam em ocorrências criminais na cidade. O recorte temporal justifica-se por este ser um período em que Teresina, inserida no novo ordenamento social que a república propunha, vivenciara um processo de modernização na sua infraestrutura, além do embelezamento do espaço urbano, que contribuíram para o surgimento de novas sociabilidades. O corpus documental que permitiu o desenvolvimento do tema proposto é formado por crônicas, contos e artigos publicados em jornais, revistas, arquivos da cadeia pública de Teresina, da Secretaria de Polícia do Estado do Piauí, processos jurídicos penais, inquéritos policiais, bem como romances, poesias, dados censitários, mensagens e relatórios governamentais. Os cronistas são utilizados como interlocutores privilegiados da cidade, por vivenciarem o cotidiano e produzirem textos que expressam intenções claras em regular o comportamento dos habitantes, com o objetivo de edificar uma sociedade civilizada nos moldes europeus. No universo conceitual que norteia o presente estudo, destacam-se os conceitos sobre pobres e o mundo da pobreza, vistos, respectivamente, como o indivíduo que de modo permanente ou temporário, encontra-se em situação de debilidade, dependência e humilhação caracterizada pela privação de meios, e um meio esotérico e exótico que parece refletir os problemas da sociedade dos ―homens de bem‖, propostos por Mollat (1989) e Geremek (1989). Sobre processo civilizador, modernização e modernidade, utilizamos os estudos de Elias (1994), Ortiz (1991) e Rezende (1999; 200) respectivamente. Para as discussões sobre História, Mulheres, Literatura, Criminalidade foram utilizados trabalhos como os de Dias (1984), Soihet (1989), Esteves (1989), Castelo Branco (2005), Cardoso (2010), Fausto (1984), Foucault (1987). Argumenta-se que os valores morais de viver e conviver em sociedade que despontavam na cidade, contribuíram para que as populares fossem colocadas à margem do padrão de civilidade pelo qual as pessoas passavam a ser cobradas. ABSTRACT: This work studies the historical and social conditions that involved the daily life of poor women in Teresina, capital of the State of Piauí, during the years 1890 to 1920. It is questioned the ways of perceiving the poor women of the city, the norms that ensured this definition and the articulations of their practices to the new social organization of the Republic and the projects of modernization and civilization that Intellectuals intended for Teresina. The aim is to know the social and cultural codes that have focused on women in these segments, through the analysis of living conditions, work, leisure and to commit themselves to criminal occurrences in the city. The temporal cut is justified by this being a period in which Teresina, inserted in the new social order that the republic proposed, had experienced a process of modernization in its infrastructure, besides the beautification of the urban space, that contributed to the emergence of new sociabilities. The documentary corpus that allowed the development of the proposed theme is made up of chronicles, short stories and articles published in newspapers, magazines, archives of the public prison by Teresina, the Police Department of the State of Piauí, criminal legal processes, police inquiries as well Such as novels, poems, census data, government messages and reports. The chroniclers are used as privileged interlocutors of the city, for experiencing the daily life and produce texts that express clear intentions in regulating the behavior of the inhabitants, with the objective of building a civilized society in the European molds. In the conceptual universe that guides the present study, the concepts about the poor and the world of poverty stand out, viewed, respectively, as the individual who, permanently or temporarily, is in a situation of weakness, dependence and humiliation characterized by deprivation And an esoteric and exotic medium that seems to reflect the problems of the "good men" society proposed by Mollat (1989) and Geremek (1989).
